The clips below are of actual classroom activity
(playlists) and demonstrate the types of classroom
data in the Multimedia Adult English Learner Corpus
(MAELC). These video-recordings, of the English
as a Second Language (ESL) classes at the Lab School,
are real classes. That is, what the viewer
sees is unscripted, unedited footage of an actual,
ongoing language program. They are not
meant to illustrate perfect instruction but real,
everyday language learning and teaching. |

The ESL Program |
Before you watch the classroom clips, here is
an overview of the program, the students and the
instruction.The instruction is representative of
ESL classes at other PCC sites (six in the Portland
area), and follows the ESL Department's current
outcome-based curriculum. The Lab School classes
are the two lowest levels of ESL offered through
Portland Community College (PCC): Level A (beginning:
SPL 0-2) and Level B (high beginning: SPL 3-4).

The Students |
Classes meet for three hours twice a week for
ten weeks per quarter (eight weeks in summer).
The class portions that you see could be at any
time during the quarter. The students are adult
learners, ranging from 18 to 78 years of age.
They represent more than 16 different countries
and more than nine language backgrounds. The
students' levels of education in their home countries
vary widely. Some students have little or
no formal education, while others hold college degrees.
Their language learning goals vary: |
|
|
- talking with their children's teachers
|
- talking with their neighbors
|
- accessing community services
|
|
All students have signed a consent form explaining
the Lab School. They understand that the video-recordings
of the classes will be used for research and professional
development purposes only. You are watching the
video through ClassAction Viewer, software created
specifically for the viewing of video, transcription
and coding data from the Lab School video corpus.

Playlist #1 -- What can be seen with the cameras? |
Background information: |
This is a series of clips from the middle of the
term in Level B. The teacher presents an Action
English Pictures sequence ("Good morning")
to introduce the grammar and the vocabulary for
describing one's morning routine. The students
the work with their partners and describe their
own morning routine. In this clip, Jesus,
a Spanish-speaker, is telling Ashley, a Cambodian
speaker, about his morning routine. |
|
What's being illustrated? |
This series of clips illustrates the set up of
a pair activity and the activity itself from three
of the six camera angles -- two of the whole class
camera views, as well as one of the two cameras
following the students wearing the lavalier microphones
that day. The viewer also hears what comes
through the ceiling microphones associated with
each of those cameras. |

Playlist #3 -- Pair work (+ transcription) |
Background information: |
In this set of clips from Level A, it is the last
day of class. The instructor is conducting
one-on-one conferences with the students regarding
their class placement and registration for the subsequent
term. During the conferences, the other students
are completing different exercise worksheets.
The students in the clips are in the process of
completing a word search. He is a young Spanish-speaker.
She is an elderly Chinese-speaker. They often
worked together during the term. |
|
What's being illustrated? |
This set of clips illustrates pair interaction
(plus transcription of that interaction) and the
variety of students that we serve, in this case
