Imanuel - In The Classroom
Imanuel's interaction in the classroom is notable for the way he was able to use many available classroom resources to further his language learning and his social networks. The day by day observations of classroom interactions allows evidence to emerge for how Imanuel's interest and agency are accomplished in face-to-face classroom interaction. These three clips from the classroom show Imanuel taking advantage of the teacher as a resource to mediate classroom participation by asking about ways to use English pragmatics (Click to View) (Requires Internet Explorer) and syntax (Click to View) (Requires Internet Explorer). A third clip shows his negotiation with peers and teacher which lead to the understanding of the question word "when"(Click to View) (Requires Internet Explorer). While the classroom is an important resource for learners to understand the structural features of the linguistic system, we know they also provide a site for the exchange of local cultural information through which language development proceeds. The next two clips illustrated this. In the first, (Click to View) (Requires Internet Explorer)we see Imanuel as the recipient in a discussion about a student identification card and its advantages. In the second clip, Imanuel shares his knowledge of driver's permit with his peer (Click to View) (Requires Internet Explorer). |
