In-home interviews with bilingual interviewers

Native Language Interview components:
  • Questionnaire in participant's first language. Each year the questionnaire has a different focus. In year 1 the focus is on family, education and employment information. In year 2 the focus is on language use in employment and other settings.
  • A survey of weekly reading in first and second languages.

English Language Assessment Measures:
  • BEST (Basic English Skills Test) Plus - a computer-based adaptive oral interview that is used to measure oral English proficiency
  • Peabody Picture Vocabulary test - to measure receptive English oral vocabulary
  • TALS (Test of Adult Literacy Skills) - to measure English literacy
  • English elicitation procedure - students are asked to talk to an English speaking audience through the medium of a video tape. Participants choose from a set of questions, have a few minutes to plan and then answer the questions in English, on tape. This provides an oral language sample that is semi-planned. This also gives the participant a chance to tell his or her own story. The focus of the questions in the first year is the initial immigration experience. The focus of the second year is on work and family experiences.
