The Classroom Coding System  
   

The classroom coding system is designed to index the learner corpus to help conduct research on second language acquisition and pedagogy

  • The classroom codes contain information on

o       Participation pattern

§         the grouping reflected in the work pattern in the classroom

o       Activity

§         the instructional units into which the class is divided

Participation Pattern

Participation pattern codes indicate the grouping of the class members.  The timeline of the ongoing class is divided into periods of time during which students are working in one of the following participation patterns:

 

  • Teacher fronted
  • Student fronted
  • Individual-private
  • Individual-public
  • Pair
  • Group
  • Free movement

 

Activity

Class time is divided into a series of time periods indicating instructional units.  Each activity is described by:

  • Beginning and ending  time points
  • Prompt
    • who is providing the prompt for the activity
    • what the prompt is
  • Information
    • Who is providing the information that the students use in the activity
    • What the information being used is
  • Language
    • Who is providing the language that the students use in the activity
